Level: All. No previous experience necessary.
Have you ever wanted to go geocaching? Do you even know what geocaching is? Geocaching is like treasure hunting with a GPS (Global Positioning System). On this trip, you will learn the basics of using a GPS. Using a GPS, we go to specific coordinates. At these coordinates, sometimes there is a question that can only be answered by visiting that place, sometimes there is a container to find, and sometimes that container is really tiny, making one really search for it. Geocaching combines the fun of walking and exploring new places with the challenge of looking for something. It ranges in difficulty from very easy to extremely challenging.
For this trip, we will be doing a large virtual cache in Shepherdstown, WV. A virtual cache is one where you go to a location to answer a question. This particular cache has multiple locations, offering a beautiful and complete tour of this quaint town, as well as some local history. Along the way, we may even do a couple other regular caches,
as well. Afterwards, we can enjoy lunch in town at one of the many restaurants.
Be prepared to do a lot of walking. If you have a GPS, please bring it, however, you do not need a GPS to do this event.

If you like the water, come try out this new sport. The National Capital Area Women's Paddling Association (NCAWPA) will be offering a novice class for WWO on outrigger canoeing and dragon boating. We'll learn about the history and use of Hawaiian Outrigger Canoes and Chinese Dragon Boats and paddling techniques for each of these boats. We'll also hear about racing as well as recreational paddling opportunities with the club. The NCAWPA spearheaded the development of dragon boating on the East Coast with their racing team, the DC Dragons. Their outrigger crew, the NCA Outrigger, was one of the first women's outrigger teams on the East Coast. After the orientation class and a short break for lunch, we'll take one of their 36-foot outrigger canoes out on the water to practice what we have learned. If there are enough people attending the class, we may even have a chance to try out the dragon boat.
If you would like to get a glimpse of these beautiful boats prior to our class, the
2009 Washington DC Dragon Boat Festival will be held in Washington, DC on May 16-17, 2009 at Thompson's Boat House in Georgetown and the Washington Monumental Outrigger Canoe Race will be held on June 20, 2009 at Anacostia Community Boathouse. NCAWPA's web site is http://www.ncawpa.org/.
