Geocaching in Virginia, Saturday, February 27, 2010

Have you ever wanted to go geocaching? Do you even know what geocaching is? Geocaching is like treasure hunting with a GPS (Global Positioning System). On this trip, you will learn the basics of using a GPS. Using a GPS, we go to specific coordinates. At these coordinates, sometimes there is a question that needs to be answered that can only be answered by visiting that place, sometimes there is a container to find, and sometimes that container is really tiny, making one really search for it. Geocaching combines the fun of walking and exploring new places with the challenge of looking for something. It ranges in difficulty from very easy to extremely challenging.

For this trip, we will be doing caches in Huntley Meadows Park in Virginia. If you have a GPS, please bring it; however, you do not need a GPS to do this event. Saturday, February 27, 2010, Alexandria, VA , 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., $10 members, $15 non-members. Level: All. No previous experience necessary. This event is suitable for novices.
Registration Deadline: Wednesday, February 24, 2010.

Gunpowder Falls State Park Day Hike, Saturday, March 27, 2010

This hike through a section of the Hereford Wildlands is probably the most scenic area in the Baltimore Region, with characteristics reminiscent of western Maryland. Here the river flows through a narrow steep-sided valley. The trail can be rugged; the v-shaped gorge has no room for a flood plain.

The hike is a figure eight loop and ends at the parking lot. The participant can stop after the first loop. The first loop is about 6.3 miles. The second loop is 3 miles and is rockier than the first loop. Saturday, March 27, 2010, Hereford, MD North of Baltimore, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., $10 members, $15 non-members. Level: 6, 9.3 miles.
