Where do you go in West Virginia to find an eclectic group of hippies and some genuine mountain music?! That is how The Purple Fiddle in Thomas, WV has been described. Or this… “If I had to make a list of my top 10 favorite places in the world (and I’ve been quite a few places), The Purple Fiddle would make that list!”
We will meet up Saturday morning and carpool to Thomas, WV where we will hike some of the Blackwater Canyon Trail in the Monongahela National Forest. The trail curves along the Blackwater River and its north branch, meandering through Blackwater Falls State Park and is a terrifically scenic pathway with mountains lining both sides of the canyon and wonderful sounds of the roaring river. It is possible we will happen upon one of several endangered species along the trail, including the WVA flying squirrel, Indiana bat or the Cheat Mount salamander.
In the late afternoon and evening, we will enjoy a one-of a kind performance and dinner at the Purple Fiddle
Cafe, Brews and Stage before heading to our campsite at a nearby campground. On Sunday, we will return to the Blackwater Canyon Trail to finish our miles and to take in more sites before heading home.
Gear sharing, meal planning, carpooling and all other details will be worked out by email the week before the trip. WWO has a limited amount of equipment to lend as a member benefit. This trip is Saturday through Sunday.
Registration Deadline: Wednesday, August 9, 2017
