Every year, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens transforms the garden into a half-mile, walk of lights. Perennial favorites include the animated Lakeside Lights, the Fountain of Lights, and the Holiday Nature Walk-new displays each year. Afterwards, we can enjoy hot beverages and roasting marshmallows which are available for purchase at the S’more Snack shop.

WWO Leader will be purchasing the tickets online, please bring $14.00 for your ticket.

This hike starts at Gathland State Park, which has a 50-foot-high arch commemorating Civil War newspaper correspondents. We will hike up and along the wooded mountain ridge and relax at the scenic White Rock Overlook. If weather permits, we will reverse our steps to pick up the side trail that takes us down to Bear Springs Cabin, then go back up (very steeply) to White Rocks a second time.

We hear the zoo is a fascinating place in winter! Starting in Bethesda, our route will include Capital Crescent and Rock Creek Trails, as well as some roads. When we arrive at the zoo, a WWO member who volunteers there will give us a special tour. We’ll have lunch at the zoo, too (bring your own or buy), before heading back.

The Beltsville Agricultural Center provides an oasis of green in a rapidly urbanizing area. While the park offers a look at acres of woodlands and meadows, the research center preserves another vanishing landscape: that of the American farm. All this can be found only 15 miles northeast of the city. This ride winds through the Agricultural Center with stops at the Patuxent Wildlife Center and Glenn Dale Community Center.

Rolling hills on country roads. Not recommended for absolute beginners, but suitable for in-shape riders.


Join us on a road ride over the gentle hills and through the scenic valleys of Frederick County. We will ride over three historic covered bridges and take in great views of scenic farmland and the nearby Catoctin Mountains. We’ll meet in the parking lot of the Lewistown School near Thurmont, MD. Please arrive 15 minutes early so we can roll out on time.

We can stop for a late lunch after the ride.

Looking for a way to burn off the Thanksgiving turkey? Bring your Thanksgiving leftovers and join us for our annual “Burn Off the Turkey” hike on Sugarloaf Mountain. Sugarloaf Mountain stands 800 feet above the farmland below. We will hike an 8.1-mile loop with 4,000 feet of elevation gain and loss, through the woods and along ridges, stopping at overlooks with picturesque views of the surrounding area.

Come explore the rural community surrounding Nokesville, VA, which was once the center of a farming community with cattle and dairy farms. In the 1950s it was cut off from passenger trains and remains a rural community today. Although there has been a lot of development in this area in the last few years, this remains one of our favorite rides, with only 3.5 mile section having heavy traffic. Most of the ride is over rolling hills and through beautiful scenery. (931′ Elevation Change).

Please arrive 15 minutes early to be ready to roll at our departure time of 10:00 am.

We will meet in Poolesville, MD and enjoy the scenic rustic roads of Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve, a nationally acclaimed area that was established in 1980 in response to the rapid disappearance of Montgomery County farms. We will cross one lane bridges and ride by farms and through forests in view of Sugarloaf Mountain. Bring snacks and we will end the day with an optional late lunch at Bassetts – a Poolesville favorite.

Please arrive in time to be ready to roll at our departure time of 10:00.

This section of the AT offers a beautiful overlook and camping one night on the trail near an Appalachian Trail shelter. We will start at Turners Gap and the historic Old South Mountain Inn and head towards the Shelter, setting up our campsite and leaving our packs before day hiking to White Rocks Overlook and then back to our campsite. Campfire and star gazing should make this a memorable trip!

Gear sharing, meal planning, carpooling and all other details will be worked out by email the week before the trip. WWO has a limited amount of equipment to lend as a member benefit.

Your furry friend is invited.

This trip is Saturday to Sunday.
