Sunday, October 28, 2018
Indian Head, MD
10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
$7 members, $10 non-members
Level: 26.0 miles
Flat trail, suitable for beginners and above.

The Indian Head Rail Trail offers a unique natural outdoor experience. It is far removed from development and life’s often chaotic pace. The trail was a generous gift through the Department of the Interior’s Federal Lands to Parks Program. The 13-mile (26 miles round trip), paved trail traverses roughly halfway across Charles County, connecting the town of Indian Head to State Route 301 in White Plains. Along the trail, there are interpretive signs that highlight various natural habitat areas and wildlife species, giving visitors the opportunity to view beaver dams, bald eagles, wild turkey, deer, and herons.

Sunset Rocks Backpacking Trip

Gardners, PA
Michaux State Forest
8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
$25 members, $35 non-members
Level: 7, 8.0 miles, All levels.

This trip offers several unusual features: Old Rag-style rock scrambles, ruins of an iron-working camp, a western-facing rock outcropping where we can watch the sun set, and last and by far not the least – it passes by the half-way point of the Appalachian Trail! At the top of the ridge, we can watch the sun set from west-facing Sunset Rocks, then return to our camp set up by an AT shelter. It is worthy to note that the rock scramble may make this trip unsuitable for anyone with mobility limitations.

Gear sharing, meal planning, carpooling and all other details will be worked out by email the week before the trip.

WWO has a limited amount of backpacking equipment to lend as a member benefit.

This trip is Saturday to Sunday.

Join us on this fairly challenging ascent which combines Virginia’s best waterfall with the Appalachian Trail and a stunning 360-degree panorama view atop Spy Rock. Said to be the tallest cascade east of the Mississippi, Crabtree Falls consists of five major cascades and a large number of smaller ones, all together totaling a vertical drop of more than 1,000 feet. Spy Rock is an incredible rock dome on the east side of Maintop Mountain with breathtaking views of the entire Religious Range, Mt. Pleasant, Three Ridges, St. Mary’s Wilderness area, and the eastern foothills. From Crabtree Falls, we will follow the Appalachian Trail to some nice campsites at the base of the summit in time for a spectacular sunset. We are planning an out and back trip. The elevation change on the Crabtree Falls Trail and Appalachian Trail are steady climbs.

Gear sharing, meal planning, carpooling and all other details will be worked out by email the week before the trip. WWO has a limited amount of
